With 1.86 billion monthly active users as of December 2016, Facebook is the world’s largest social-media network. But in Taiwan, Facebook is unusually dominant: its penetration rate (the proportion of internet users with Facebook accounts) here is 82%, higher than anywhere else in the world.
Internet users in Taiwan typically use just one or two mobile apps on a regular basis, and the two most popular apps here are Line and Facebook Messenger.

DBS projected Taiwan's 2018 GDP growth at 2.3 percent and said its forecast may be upgraded based on the effects of the next generation iPhones on the economy. Apple's new iPhones are expected to help drive Taiwan's economy in 2017 and 2018 as waves of replacement are likely on their release because of significant upgrades.

Taiwan has risen three notches to rank 14th among the 186 countries in the world in the Heritage Foundation's Index of Economic Freedom for 2015. Within the Asia Pacific region, Taiwan finished fifth among the 42 countries covered, trailing only Hong Kong, Singapore, New Zealand, and Australia, and Taiwan's score was well above the world average.

Taiwan’s level of journalistic freedom leads its East Asian counterparts, the annual World Press Freedom Index report released by Reporters Without Borders (RWB) showed, with Taiwan staying at No. 51 for the second year.

Media freedom in countries in the Asia-Pacific region had either deteriorated or stagnated, the report said. It also highlights that there has been a decline in media freedom the world over, with the trend particularly worrisome in Latin America.
