Taiwan Ranked 2nd Freest Country in Asia

Taiwan was listed in the No. 2 spot among the freest countries in Asia, in Freedom House's 2016 "Freedom in the World" report.

In the report's 100-point scoring system, Taiwan scored 89, second in Asia only to Japan (96) and ahead of Mongolia (86), South Korea (83) and India (77).

Meanwhile, on China, the annual report said the Communist Party regime there had "intensified its persecution of human rights lawyers, journalists, and minority rights advocates in the wake of the stock-market crash and singled out new targets for abuse, including labor activists, public health advocates, and women's rights defenders, more than offsetting the institution of a two-child policy and other modest reforms."
