Taiwan to Become World's No. 1 Chip Equipment Spender

Taiwan is expected to grab the title as the largest spender on semiconductor equipment in 2015. Taiwan's chip equipment spending is expected to total US$10.89 billion in 2015, ahead of South Korea's estimated US$8.55 billion and North America's US$6.5billion.

The top three in the rankings for semiconductor equipment spending for 2016 is expected to remain unchanged. The association forecast that Taiwan's semiconductor equipment spending could reach US$10 billion in 2016.

TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) is scheduled to launch commercial production of the 10nm process in the fourth quarter of 2016 and start to ship chips made on the technology in the first quarter of 2017.
